Marion County Comprehensive Plan

The City of Indianapolis should maintain a county-wide approach to zoning, re-zoning and variances.

The Chamber supports consistent county-wide planning and zoning as the practice which is in the best interest of all Indianapolis residents. The city has benefited from this approach because of its broad vision which results in well-planned development throughout the County. It is important to maintain uniform zoning on a county wide basis to ensure the best opportunity for economic development throughout the county.Although this is the best approach for economic development, there continues to be efforts to move all or portions of planning and zoning to the township level. The Chamber and the business community has stood firm in its opposition to this policy. If legislation is passed to allow townships this authority, it would put an undue burden on businesses and city residents. Among the problems with this approach are increased bureaucracy, bigger government, more local taxes, and increased housing and real estate costs to city residents.

Zoning should not only be conducted on a county-wide level it should also take into consideration the surrounding counties and how their zoning affects the city of Indianapolis. Through work being completed by the Comprehensive Plan zoning will be addressed on a county wide level and it will consider how surrounding county zoning affects Marion County.
