Legislature Inches its Way to Final Week of Session
Today, the Indiana General Assembly enters its final week of the 2008 legislative session with few issues surrounding property tax reform resolved.
Though several bills were given hearings in conference committees, little to no action was taken on bills ranging from constitutional caps on property taxes to consolidation of Marion County fire departments.
In a more troubling sign, little indication of the final product was given. House and Senate Republicans held a news conference Thursday, March 6, outlining their priorities on HB1001—the main property tax reform bill. House Speaker Pat Bauer (D-South Bend) and leaders from the Senate Democrats said they refused to negotiate through the media, but publicly released a vague counter offer Friday morning.
Though it does not currently look promising for Marion County fire consolidation and efforts to move school board elections to the general election, the last week of the legislative session is known for surprises and deal making. Anything can happen in the final week. Rest assured your Chamber advocates will continue to fight for you until the very end.
Make sure to check back for a full debrief on the legislative session, and don’t forget to register for the March 25 Baker & Daniels Pancakes & Politics (7:30 – 9 a.m., 300 N. Meridian, Ste. 2500), where we will hear from legislative leaders, Rep. Bill Crawford (D-Indianapolis) and Sen. Teresa Lubbers (R-Indianapolis) to get their take on this monumental legislative session. To RSVP, please contact Misty Helm at mhelm@indylink.com or 317.464.2250.
On a more somber note, State Sen. David Ford (R-Hartford City), the legislature’s leading authority on technology issues, died at his home Wednesday morning, March 5, from complications related to pancreatic cancer. He was 59. Our hearts go out to his family in this difficult time.
