I-69: International Trade Corridor
 

The State of Indiana must act swiftly and decisively to capture existing federal funds and implement the expansion of Interstate 69 from Evansville to Indianapolis.

As economic opportunities become global, it is critical for the communities of mid-America to have the infrastructure to compete in a complex environment. The completion of Interstate 69 through southwest Indiana will foster international trade from Canada to Mexico.  Indianapolis and the surrounding communities on the new route will benefit from the construction of the highway as a transportation corridor and a connection to southwest Indiana.  The highway will also serve as a crucial competitive edge for future economic growth of the state.

Isolation has devastated the economies of many southwestern Indiana counties.  These counties have little or no access to major employers, airports, colleges or to the state capitol.  The completion of I-69 will make southwestern Indiana more attractive to potential employers, create more jobs and growth, while boosting the cost effectiveness of transportation.   Spin-off opportunities would create a new economic artery throughout the southwestern Indiana region.

The Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce has long supported the construction of a highway to connect Evansville and southwestern Indiana to Indianapolis through the most direct route possible.  It is time to bring southwest Indiana opportunity and access.  The State of Indiana must allocate state funds and capture federal funds to make Interstate 69 a reality.

What the Greater Indianapolis Chamber is doing:

  • The Chamber is an active member of Hoosiers for I-69 The Chamber has testified in support of construction of I-69 before the Indiana  Department of Transportation, the Central Indiana Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and various community hearings The Chamber’s Economic Growth Council has made the I-69 issue a priority for this year
  • The Chamber continues to monitor the Interstate 69 issue

  • Encourage Mayor Peterson to actively join other mayors supportive of the I-69 project
  • Encourage Indianapolis/Marion County City-County Councils to support the highway
