Indy Chamber, Develop Indy, Indy Partnership
and Business Ownership Initiative Merger
Frequently Asked Questions
Why was a merger of the organizations considered?
The time has come for a new, stronger organization that can lead our city forward on a global scale. Together we can create a shared vision. By unifying our voice, mission and identity we can strategically maximize private sector investment. Our focus can now be to drive economic development and prosperity for the Greater Indianapolis region by creating an environment of growth, investment and enhanced quality of life. Together, we can work toward making Indianapolis a global hub for smart business and a community of thriving neighborhoods.
What type of due-diligence was conducted to reach this conclusion?
The Indy Chamber has long considered alignment with other organizations with similar goals and missions. Members of both the Chamber and Develop Indy boards have studied this issue in-depth. Our leaders have visited the top cities in the country that Indianapolis is currently competing with, and almost all of these markets have chambers that have merged with economic development corporations. These cities are considered economic powerhouses. This merger will help us to remain competitive in this global economy.
What will the new organization look like?
The Indy Chamber will serve as the umbrella organization, with Develop Indy, Indy Partnership, and Business Ownership Initiative operating as a separate business units, under the Chamber.
What will happen to The Indy Partnership?
Indy Partnership currently operates under Develop Indy, but under this new model, it will become a separate business unit under the Chamber. The Indy Partnership Executive Committee (IPEC) and the chairs of the boards of the local economic development organizations (LEDOs) recently voted to move Indy Partnership under the Chamber umbrella.
Are you doing this merger to save money?
One of the greatest benefits this merger will provide is the ability to focus more funding on economic development, business services, and implementation of community initiatives. Through strategic coordination and alignment of services, there is a potential for the new organization to grow our revenue.
How will my input be considered?
We will keep you apprised of developments and encourage your input and involvement throughout this process. Melissa Todd has been appointed as the chair for the transition team. She is available to speak with investors and members to address concerns. You can contact her at mtodd@developindy.com
How will the new model affect change?
A new, unified organization will broaden the private sector investment base while narrowing the duplication of efforts and resources. A unified approach to business and economic development will strengthen our region’s ability to market to potential employers and streamline efforts to serve existing businesses.
How will business partners be impacted?
Business partners will see a positive impact, including a streamlined, efficient organization that is working strategically to move the region forward. Business partners will also experience an improved level of service and focus.
How will the new organization be funded?
The organization will continue to be funded through private sector contributions, public sector contributions, membership dues, grants, and program income. All Marion County public sector resources will remain in the county and devoted to economic/community development activities relevant to Marion County.
Where will the funds for political activities come from (non-taxpayer) and who approves?
Taxpayer resources will not be used to support Chamber lobbying efforts. The Chamber has its own Political Action Committee that independently raises candidate contribution dollars. Develop Indy will maintain separate accounting for public dollars to ensure no public funds will be used for lobbying/political activities. Business Ownership Initiative will also maintain separate accounting to be sure federal dollars received are not used for lobbying/political purposes.
What is the timeline for this merger?
It is our goal to complete the transition process by September 2012.
